Summer Baroque Chamber Music Workshop

Madison Bach Musicians is excited to offer a Summer Baroque Chamber Music Workshop over two days in July focusing on historically informed performance of Baroque and early Classical music. This workshop is open to intermediate and advanced string instrument, recorder/flute, and piano/harpsichord players who are high school age and older. Participants will be assigned to an ensemble group for the workshop, and music will be sent in advance to allow musicians to practice and learn their parts before the workshop. The workshop will include ensemble coaching and rehearsal times, a special session on historical performance practice, group lunches and a closing informal concert where ensembles will run through their pieces for a supportive and appreciative audience. Our faculty will also play a piece at this closing concert.

All daytime workshop events will take place at First Unitarian Society of Madison, 900 University Bay Drive, Madison, WI. The closing concert will be held in the beautiful historic space of the Landmark Auditorium.
Application and Fees
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is advisable to get your application in as soon as possible as this workshop will be kept to a small number of participants to maintain an intimate and supportive feel.
For an application to be complete, please fill out the online form, and pay a nonrefundable $20 fee. If the workshop is full, we will notify you and return or credit your application fee of $20. You may submit a placement recording that would help us assign you to an ensemble group – however this is just recommended and is not required.

Placement recordings in the form of MP3, IPhone voice memo, or links to online media clips may be sent to madisonbachmusicians.manager@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your name and the instrument you are playing. This recording will help us assign you to an ensemble group.
Application Fee
To pay the $20 application fee, please either pay online , or send your check payable to “Madison Bach Musicians” and note “Summer Workshop,” and mail to Madison Bach Musicians, 5729 Forsythia Pl, Madison, WI 53705.
Tuition
Tuition for the two day workshop is $100 and is due two weeks after you receive the letter that you been accepted into the workshop. Tuition includes the ensemble coaching, special sessions, lunch and snacks for the two days, and the final informal concert in the Landmark Auditorium.
Cancellation Fee
Because significant amounts of time and effort go into placing participants into suitable ensemble groups, a cancellation fee of $35 will apply. No tuition refunds are available after June 30th.
Instruments
String and wind players will play on their own instruments. Keyboard players may play on the pianos and harpsichord at First Unitarian Society. The Landmark Auditorium has a beautiful French double manual harpsichord built by Mark Rosa and an 1899 restored Steinway grand piano.
Madison Bach Musicians Summer Workshop Faculty
Kangwon Lee Kim,Madison Bach Musicians concertmaster, is a versatile violinist with repertoire ranging from baroque to 21st-century using both baroque and modern violins. She has performed internationally giving solo and chamber recitals in Korea, Canada, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Norway, and Czech Republic. Ms. Kim has recorded for the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and CRI labels and has collaborated with world-renowned musicians including Menahem Pressler and Laurence Lesser. As a baroque violinist, Ms. Kim has performed with the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble, Brandywine Baroque, the Classical Symphony, Calisto in San Francisco, and the Baroque Band in Chicago. She has also appeared in faculty recitals at the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin and has given guest recitals at Pomona College and the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Kim was assistant professor in violin and chamber music at Biola University in CA and has also taught at Ripon College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Lawrence University Conservatory. During the summer, she teaches at Credo summer chamber music festival at Oberlin College.
Linda Pereksta performs on a variety of historical flutes and recorders with Madison Bach Musicians as well as ensembles such as Washington Bach Consort, the Spire Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Musical Offering, Tallahassee Bach Parley and Belle Meade Baroque. She serves on the National Flute Association’s Historical Flutes Committee, is Editor of TRAVERSO, and has written for The Flutist Quarterly and Flute Talk. A two-time prizewinner in the NFA’s Baroque Flute Artist Competition, she also won its Graduate Research Competition. Linda teaches Flute and directs the Early Music Ensemble at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Madison Bach Musicians is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to presenting the music of Bach and other early music composers to audiences through historically informed performances, lectures by faculty, and educational workshops.
